Course design overview

The project “Enhancing Psychosocial Services for Traumatized Persons in
Conflict-Affected Areas in Thailand’s Deep South.”

This project did not begin from zero. It builds on earlier initiatives, including the Training of Trainers for Community Resilience, Mental Health, and Human Rights Support from 2022–2023. That one-year pilot demonstrated that when frontline actors—teachers, religious leaders, nurses, volunteers, and community workers—are equipped with appropriate psychosocial skills, they can make a meaningful difference.

The first module focuses on self-awareness among helping professionals. It emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s own emotional state, psychological well-being, and personal vulnerabilities. Without adequate self-awareness and self-care, practitioners’ ability to support others may be compromised, potentially leading to burnout or cumulative stress over time.

The second module strengthens participants’ competencies in providing early psychosocial support. It covers essential skills such as active listening, basic situational assessment, confidentiality, and appropriate referral decision-making. This module is designed to equip participants with practical tools that can be immediately applied when assisting individuals affected by violence or traumatic events.

The third module emphasizes experiential learning through field engagement. Participants visit communities to better understand local realities, contextual challenges, and existing community resources. The field-based learning enables participants to recognize systemic constraints and appreciate that psychosocial interventions cannot be uniformly applied across different contexts.

The final module focuses on sustainability and network strengthening. It emphasizes linking participants with local service networks and designing approaches that communities can continue beyond the duration of the project. The project’s ultimate objective is not merely knowledge transfer, but the establishment of a functional and sustainable care system tailored to conflict-affected settings.
