Module 1: "Self" (Inner Self)

May 26–27, 2025, at the Southern Airport Hotel, Hat Yai

Target audiences: School psychological counselors / NGOs supporting traumatized women and children / Community health volunteers

The core philosophy of Module 1 is rooted in the belief that effective psychosocial support in high-conflict areas requires caregivers who are self-aware and mentally resilient. Since many frontline practitioners have also lived through the same traumatic situation as those 2nd beneficiaries, the curriculum prioritizes “healing the self before healing others”. It employs Experiential Learning, Transformative Learning, and Positive Psychology to shift behaviors from within.

Core Competencies Developed

The curriculum is designed to build specific competencies across knowledge, skills, and attitudes:

  • Self-Awareness & Resilience: Recognizing one’s own character strengths, psychological reactions to trauma, and the ability to practice self-healing and stress prevention.
  • Fundamental Psychosocial Skills: Psychological First Aid (PFA) using the “Look-Listen-Link” framework and basic community mental health principles.
  • Empathetic Communication: Advanced skills in Deep Listening, storytelling, and the I-You Message technique to build positive relationships.
  • Initial Assessment & Screening: The ability to use brief screening tools for PTSD (CRIES 8/13) and Depression (PHQ-9) to identify those in urgent need.

Strength-Based Coaching: Utilizing the GROW Model (Goal, Reality, Options, Planning) to develop colleagues and youth

Session Deliverables: What is Delivered in Module 1

Module 1 is conducted for two days :

Day 1: The Human Connection and Self-Discovery

The focus is on the “Inner Self” of the learner and finding meaning in their work.

  • Engagement & Shared Goals: Activities like “Speed Dating” to build a safe environment and positive relationships among the diverse groups.
  • Processing Pain & Success: Sessions for participants to vent life stressors from the past year and then transition to identifying personal successes and Character Strengths.
  • Healing Techniques: Introduction to Breathing Exercises and Body Scanning for self-relaxation.
  • Case Dynamics: A demonstration of the BEN technique (Breathing, Embracing, Naming) for grounding and initial treatment planning.

Day 2: From Self to Community Support

The focus shifts to applying skills to help others while maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Grounding & Mental Health Literacy: Role-plays on how to interview those who have experienced trauma and education on PTSD and Depression.
  • Art as Therapy: Using drawing, clay, or movement as diagnostic and healing tools to facilitate self-disclosure.
  • Systematic Support: Practicing Dynamic Formulation (Psycho-bio-social levels) to understand a survivor’s situation holistically.
  • GROW Model Implementation: Participants practice coaching each other on their plans to implement these skills once they return to their communities.

Post-Module: Digital & Extended Learning

  • Zoom Tutoring: Focused sessions on Questionnaire Coaching.

Assessment of Learning

The module uses Authentic Assessment, where learners are evaluated through real-world application rather than just theory:

  • PERMA Rubric Scale: A self-assessment tool based on Positive Psychology (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment).
  • Portfolio & Case Logbook: Participants begin a personal record of their learning and a log to track the individuals they help (with a goal of reaching 20 people each)
